Anger and anxiety are natural emotions that everyone experiences. Everyone has felt them in various circumstances.

Anger can arise when we are frustrated, threatened, or treated unfairly. Similarly, anxiety can arise when confronted with situations that make us feel uncomfortable or scared. Anger and anxiety can affect the body, causing physical symptoms like headaches, stomachaches, and other health problems. Why is this the case?

How do anger and anxiety affect health and cause physical symptoms?

Emotions, such as anger and anxiety, can affect the body through several mechanisms:

Sympathetic nervous system

When you feel angry or anxious, your body enters "fight-or-flight" mode. When the sympathetic nervous system is activated, stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline are released. These two hormones can cause a variety of physiological changes, including:

  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • Increased blood flow to the muscles and brain
  • Reduced blood flow for digestion
  • Release of sugar and fat into the bloodstream
  • Increased muscle tension

All these changes can cause various physical symptoms, such as:

  • Abdominal pain caused by reduced blood flow to the digestive tract. This decreased blood flow can also cause abdominal cramps, nausea and diarrhea
  • Headaches caused by increased blood pressure and muscle tension, resulting in head tension
  • Fatigue caused by the body using too much energy during “fight or flight” mode
  • Insomnia caused by stress hormones interfering with sleep and making it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep

Inflammation

Anger and anxiety that are not addressed properly can result in chronic stress. Chronic stress causes inflammation throughout the body, which can lead to a number of health issues, including:

  • Chronic pain in the entire body, including back pain, joint pain, and muscle pain
  • Crohn's disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are examples of digestive problems caused by inflammation
  • Inflammation damages the arteries and raises the risk of heart disease
  • Chronic inflammation has been associated with mental health issues like depression

Immune system disorders

Chronic anger and anxiety are also associated with a weakened immune system, making you more vulnerable to infections and other diseases. Chronic anger and anxiety cause the release of cortisol, which inhibits the production of immune cells like lymphocytes and reduces the effectiveness of immune responses.

Furthermore, emotions like anger and chronic anxiety can disrupt the balance of good bacteria in the gut, which is essential for maintaining a healthy immune system. Unbalanced bacterial growth in the gut can increase the risk of infection and autoimmune diseases.

It should be noted that not everyone feels the same physical effects of anger, anxiety, or stress. Some individuals may be more sensitive to the effects of stress than others.

If you are experiencing anger, anxiety, or stress in your life, do not hesitate to seek help from a doctor or mental health professional.
